Official Release Date: November 19, 2002 Florida's megaplatinum matchbox twenty prove with their third album to be far more versatile than expected, comfortably outlasting the predictions of naysayers. Reuniting with producer Matt Serletic, the quintet takes credible swings at gospel ("Downfall" features a choir), Traveling Wilburys-type twang ("All I Need"), and big-arena rock with "Disease," cowritten by singer Rob Thomas and Mick Jagger and winkingly recalling Thomas's star turn with Carlos Santana on "Smooth." Pedal-steel great Greg Leisz spruces up several tracks, notably the tearjerker "Hand Me Down," while producer and keyboardist Serletic and percussionist Paul Doucette sprinkle instrumental pixie dust. Original Release Date: May 23, 2000 Sell 10 million copies of your debut album and you might find yourself putting on a few airs. Evidence that it's happened to matchbox twenty can be found in the new, spelled-out format of their all-lowercased name and the pretentious insertion of that name into the title of this, their sophomore set. The level of popularity achieved by their 1996 debut, Yourself or Someone Like You, posed a more profound problem, though--should they follow in the footsteps of that smash effort, or strike out in a different direction? To their credit, the Orlando quintet puts their massive popularity on the line by opting mostly for the latter course: there are no obvious retreads here of earlier hits such as "Push," "3 a.m.," and "Real World"--or of "Smooth," the multiple-Grammy-winning Santana hit penned and sung by matchbox frontman Rob Thomas. Rob Thomas's charismatic and passionate vocal delivery carries this collection of captivating, personal-story songs, based on honest, heart-felt lyrics rich with cathartic emotion. Anyone who's felt so scarred by love that they can't imagine taking the chance of getting hurt again will relate to a song like "Push" (an exhilarating feminist anthem disguised as just another relationship-on-the-rocks song). Original Release Date: October 17, 1995 I keep her first album in heavy rotation. I got it because of her sole radio cut, "Angry Johnny". When I first heard the remainder of the album, I nearly chucked it out the back window. It seems that my musical tastes had not yet expanded to appreciate her style. Grimly, I gave her another chance and spun the CD a few more times. Now, I remember my first reaction and think that I must be dumber than a box of rocks. "Hello" is an excellent album, one of the best I've ever heard...challenging, complex, with a seeming multitude of genres represented in just a dozen or so songs. The lyrics are clever, the vocals are great, the music is just pure gold. I wish I could find some way to express the sheer joy this album brings me without sounding like some pathetic fanboy. (Too late!) I especially like it when she slows it down and approaches ballad territory, in "Fingertips", "Fly Away", and "Beautiful Girl". Poe - Haunted

Original Release Date: October 5, 2004 Give Poe credit for overcoming obstacles and delivering a second album as ambitious and loaded as Haunted. Extending over 15 wildly diverse tracks linked together by ambient interludes and spooky tape splices of old cassette recordings featuring the singer's late father, documentary filmmaker Tad Danielewski, the album shows the songstress moving effortlessly through ethereal folk-hop ("Haunted"), Shania Twain-style country rock ("Walk the Walk"), and flamenco-infused balladry ("Spanish Doll"). The only constant through the turbulence--emotional and otherwise--remains her desperately romantic voice and its desire to bid her father a proper farewell at every turn. --Jaan Uhelszki We find Poe on her second album brazen and boundlessly inspired, flexing her creative range with more quality ideas than can possibly be crammed into seventeen songs and a half-dozen genres.
