В состав коллектива входят музыканты из Африки, Азии, Латинской Америки, Европы. Release Date: 2002 Genre: World Music, Electro Quality: 192 kbps James Asher's Shaman Drums gathers some of his best fusions of world music, electronica, and new age, including "Camel Train," "Red Rhythm Dragon," and "Send in the Drums." The collection concentrates on later work such as both volumes of Feet in the Soil and Tigers of the Raj, and as with all of Asher's albums, boasts an impressive amount of musical globetrotting, spanning the African influences of "Standing Ngoma," the previously unreleased, Indian-inspired "Amma" (which also features master drummer Sivamani), and the Middle Eastern flair of "Temple Gates." Likewise, Asher's pieces vary in how much Western instrumentation they feature -- "Tantango" is almost entirely electronic, while the synths and drum machines only play supporting parts in songs like the chant and percussion-based "Janjara." This is an excellent collection of music of Burkina Fasoan music by expatriates living in Italy, heavy with talking drum and kora, flute and balafon.
Some of the songs remind me of Delta blues, in much the same way as Wassalou Music from Mali reminds me of Hill Country blues. The song "Bibile," for instance, seems to me some kind of strange cousin to a Son House song -- the drums being the snapping bass strings and the flute echoes Gabin's vocals much in the same way as the slide complemented Son's voice. This alnum is heavily weighted in drums, but also contains a few tracks with kora and the so-called "thumb piano."
It can perhaps best be summed up by a quote from the inner notes by Matteo Silva: "...the twelve tracks in Afriki Djamana are a small personal and poetic anthology of traditional sounds. The instrument... |

-------------------------- These field recordings, captured by Mark Seidenfeld in November of 1996 during a Vaudou (Voodoo)
funeral in the African village of Sogakope, Ghana, does a great service to the western world by
bringing the intensity, anger, joy and pure passion of the ceremony to western culture.
The emotions conjured by these recordings is difficult to express, suffice it to say that
the somber tone of a European funeral or even the joyous wail of a New Orleans jazz funeral
are indeed worlds away. Seidenfeld was only permitted to record these wonderful performances
on the condition that he participate in the ceremony, and the results are perhaps the best
of the tribal field recordings that I've encountered. A row of seven drummers are complimented
