The band's organic and synthetic elements are on opposite ends of the aural spectrum, but--purism be damned--Garmarna makes it appealing. There are times when the beats are a little intrusive on Hildegard's striking melodies--which are beautifully sung here by singer Emma Härdelin--but they never overwhelm the music and aren't always present. She understands the rich tradition of her instrument, but she is interested in exploring contemporary styles and techniques. Musta (Finnish for "black" -- but also containing the "hidden message" minusta which means "from me") accomplishes this with a directness and restraint which is rare for these kinds of projects. Rather than overwhelming and burying her beautiful voice with samples, drum machines and electronica, the singing is always front and center, and the accompaniment is tasteful and appropriate. The result is a full album of singing, of vocals recalling the great Finnish tradition, with production and instrumentation that is decidedly modern. That makes this all the more welcome, since Vihma, if not a return to the way things were, is at least a definite way out of the cul-de-sac. They lay their manifesto on the line with the opening title track, which crams in samples, programmed beats, a strong studio feel around an in- your-face attitude, as if to say, "We're back." And they certainly are, expanding the boundaries from the traditional music of their past to draw far more heavily on original compositions and a couple of tracks which utilize the Tuvan throat-singing tradition of Yat-Kha members Albert Kuvezin and Aldyn-ool Sevek (one of which even draws in the string section of fellow Nordic band JPP). Herders who got bored spending their days in the countryside on horseback developed throat-singing, in which a singer can sing two notes at once, a low drone and a higher melody. The high part is produced from the overtones of the low note. The style began with a cappella singing, then was extended to include music on banjo- and violin-like instruments, with a rhythm like American cowboy music. This CD includes plenty of songs by Kongar-ool Ondar and Kaigal-ool Khovalyg, two of the first Tuvans to tour America. There are several examples of various styles of hoomei (the Tuvan word for throat-singing--the English spelling of this and ALL Tuvan words varies from album to album), including by an 11-year-old student of Ondar's. But that comparison actually works to the benefit of Koshkendey. Far from being an afterthought or a cashing-in on the latest craze in world music, Igor Koshkendey is a prodigy. He is an expert in several of the region's styles of overtone singing (a manipulation of the sinuses, lips, throat, etc., that allows one person to produce two, three or even four tones simultaneously). His small group of musicians, playing primarily the oshdpuluur lute, the igil two-string fiddle, and drums, create a music that nimbly leaps from the gothic to the light and witty.
